I was born and raised in the interior of Alaska. Growing up so far from civilization and urban clutter I often encountered wildlife and scenes of wilderness beauty that would take your breath away. From a very early age I learned to appreciate the wonder and beauty of the smallest things in the forest and the way a mountain range, standing 200 miles away, could look so imposing. Perspective changes everything and my perspective sees the beauty in everything and everyone that I photograph.
The wonderful thing about shooting with digital cameras (Canon 30d and 400d) is that it allows me to shoot more than 40,000 photos each year. From those photos I’m able to present how I truly see the people and the world around me.
Ansel Adams once said “Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.” I believe that Ansel was limited by the time, expense, and the hassle of dealing with the technology at hand and that if he had used a digital camera this number would be much higher.
Just as his view of landscapes opened our eyes to details that we never noticed before, my goal is to open your eyes to subtleties in human expression and form and action that you may have never noticed before. I believe that art should be defined by emotion and any expression of art that does not elicit emotion from the viewer fails in its purpose.
I’ve had one of my photos exhibited in the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center and it was later purchased by the director of the Bemis School of Art here in Colorado Springs. Another of my images was donated for auction to TESSA to raise money for victims of domestic abuse during Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April of 2008. This photo was later donated to a Collins Center in Harrisonburg Virginia where Mr. Keith Morris saw it and asked for my permission to use it in his lectures. I proudly granted permission and I’m delighted that a piece of my art could have the power to touch someone on a deeply emotional level on a topic that can be so delicate to discuss. You can hear Mr. Morris’ lecture at the Eastern Mennonite University where he talks about this photo and his own journey through this landscape here http://emu.edu/blog/podcast/2009/01/21/take-back-the-night/
I often shoot events and portraits with the assistance of my partner Katie. Together we are able to create a more complete record of weddings and large events by coordinating and shooting candid moments from different angles. All of the weddings that we photograph are shot by both of us. She shadows the bride while she is preparing for her big day and I follow the groom during his preparation. This creates a wonderfully rich photographic package and experience for the lucky couple.
